Red Cloud was of the most prominent leaders of the Oglala Lakota from 1868 to 1909, Red Cloud was one of the most capable Native American opponents whom the United States Army faced in the western territories. He was the first and last Native American to win a war in the west against the United States. Red Cloud was a skilled fighter and hunter. He had a reputation for bravery and cunning in raids against the Pawnee and Crow. Later in his life, he began mediating peace between his people and the United States. He died at Pine Ridge in 1909. In the course of his lifetime he had watched the West go from the heyday of the Plains horse culture to an era of the almost complete eradication of Native Americans.
